Ever wondered about the electrical code and how it affects the DIYer? The following is some information on the Electrical Code in Canada. The most current version is C22.1-09, The Canadian Electrical Code online and in print, part I, (21st edition), safety standard for electrical installations.

The Canadian Electrical Code Online is available through several internet websites, including Amazon, EBay, and at the Canadian Standards Association website at www.csa.ca . Part I is adopted across Canada as regulation for the installation and maintenance of electrical equipment. The Canadian Electrical Code online, or in print form, is the code and standard that all electrical installations must conform to throughout the country of Canada. It is integrated with CSA electrical equipment standards (A.K.A. the Canadian Electrical Code, Part II) to ensure that electrical products evaluated to this standard are suitable for installation in accordance with the rules of Part I of the Canadian Electrical Code online, or in print.

May 11, 2016 News New version of the Ontario Electrical Safety Code If you don't feel like paying $219 plus tax for the printed version of the new code - $195 for the PDF - you can find the amendments for free on the ESA website. Ever wondered about the electrical code and how it affects the DIYer? The following is some information on the Electrical Code in Canada. The most current version is C22.1-09, The Canadian Electrical Code online and in print, part I, (21 st edition), safety standard for electrical installations. I bought the paper version of the canadian electrical code as I need it for school. I would like a torrent link for the 2015 CEC as I am a student and NOT up to paying for a copy. If a torrent link isn't possible, does anyone have a PDF they'd care to share?

The Canadian Electrical Code online or in print copy covers all electrical work and electrical equipment that operates, or is intended to operate at all voltages in electrical installations for buildings, structures, and premises. It also includes factory-built moveable and non-moveable structures, and self-propelled marine vessels that are stationary for longer than five months at a time, and are connected to a shore power supply from time to time or continuously connected.

The Canadian Electrical Code online or in print form, and any standards referenced in it doesn’t make or imply any guarantee or assurance by any authority adopting this Code, as it may pertain to life expectancy, durability, or operating performance of equipment and materials referenced in the Canadian Electrical Code online or in print form.

A little dry – but as I’ve said in previous posts, the electrical code is considered the ‘Bible’ of regulations and guidelines for electrical installation. Put in place to ensure safe practices with all electrical work, it definitely must be taken into consideration with any home electrical wiring projects.

New Canadian Electrical Code Now Available

TORONTO, January 8, 2018 – CSA Group, a leading standards development organization and global provider of testing and certification services, has released the 2018 Canadian Electrical Code, Part I (CE Code).

First published in 1927, the CE Code is a critical component of Canada’s electrical safety system – a system that works to keep installers, consumers, and their families safe from harm. Updated every three years to reflect the latest advances in technology and other major developments, this original, authentic Canadian-based standard aims to help maintain and enhance safety amidst these changes.

“Building on a 90-year legacy, the latest edition of the CE Code enables electrical workers to follow best practices that help ensure safety as new technologies become embedded in our everyday lives – at home and at work,” says Mary Cianchetti, President of Standards at CSA Group.

Code

Input from stakeholders is a critical component in developing the CE Code. CSA Group takes a consensus-based approach to all standards work, drawing on the expertise of over 1,600 in-house technical experts, as well as more than 9,000 volunteer subject-matter experts from across the globe.

The latest edition of the CE Code includes over 260 updates and revisions aimed at improving clarity through streamlined requirements; helping ensure safer installation and maintenance of electrical equipment; and supporting the safe implementation of new technologies and renewable energy solutions. Some of the major changes include:

  • A new sub-section of rules for power over Ethernet (POE) cables
  • The addition of demand factors for electric vehicle energy management systems
  • The installation of an identified conductor at each control location for energy management system control devices
  • Disconnecting means for certain LED luminaires
  • Tamper resistant receptacles in other areas where children may be present
  • Mandated ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) protection for electric heating devices and controls near wet areas
  • New requirements in Section 78 to help prevent electric shock drowning

To help users navigate the sheer number of changes and their impact on many different industries, CSA Group has developed a range of training solutions and electronic tools so organizations and their employees can work more safely and remain competitive.
